IPL Auction 2024 Live Updates: Australian pacer Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player ever purchased for Rs24.75 crore at an IPL Auction held in Dubai on Tuesday. Kolkata Knight Riders won his services from the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) initially engaged in an unprecedented bidding war over Starc, lasting minutes before both teams parted ways at Rs20.50 crore spent by Surrey Red Hotters for Cummins. Once GT pulled out at Rs24.75 crore, KKR signed Starc for a record prize. Spencer Johnson will move from CT back to GT at an agreed-upon fee of Rs10 crore each.Starc has left behind former captain Pat Cummins – once considered one of the costliest IPL players with Rs20.50 crore worth, sold off to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Sameer Rizwi was bought for Rs8.4 crore by Chennai Super Kings (CSK), while another uncapped batter, Shubham Dubey, was acquired by Rajasthan Royals (RR), both at an IPL auction held on Tuesday in Dubai.
Dubey found himself the subject of an intensive bidding war between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals; ultimately, he was purchased by one-time champion Rajasthan Royals.
Punjab Kings secured Indian pacer Harshal Patel for an astounding Rs11.75 crores at the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 auction held in Dubai.
Harshal Patel emerged as one of the two wealthiest players at IPL Auction 2024, having an initial base price of Rs 2 crores. Harshal had played T20 tournament matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore during the 2023 IPL season, playing 92 times while taking 111 wickets during his IPL career!
Mumbai Indians (MI) recently secured South African pacer Gerald Coetzee for Rs5 crores; his base price had initially been Rs2 crores.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made the initial bid on South African batsman Mark Coetzee before MI joined in and then Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). CSK eventually dropped out. However, Lucknow Super Giants joined as well after CSK moved back. Mumbai-based side LSG eventually won out and included Coetzee in their roster.
Coetzee has yet to make his T20 tournament debut but had an outstanding outing during the ODI World Cup 2023 for South Africa with four T20I matches at which he captured six wickets – his last 20-over match against India was also in 2023.
At auction, New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell became the third millionaire. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) purchased him for Rs14 crores.
New Zealand opener Ross Taylor did not take part in this year’s IPL tournament after retiring after having last played with Rajasthan Royals (RR) back in 2022.
At an extravagant T20 tournament, he scored 33 runs across just two matches, but for this upcoming season, he will don yellow!
Total spending across all ten franchises stands at Rs262.95 crore, and each team will use their portion to build what they consider their ideal squad. Gujarat Titans lead this charge financially with an allotment of Rs38.15 crore they plan on allocating for eight slots, followed closely by Sunrisers Hyderabad with Rs34 crore allocated towards six slots, and then Kolkata Knight Riders with 32.7 crore for 12 spots.
This year’s auction might have a different scale and star-studded atmosphere than last year’s mega auction. Still, with the talent available, it should remain an exciting, eventful affair where franchises aim to fine-tune their squads for another exciting Indian Premier League season.
